New Democrat MLAs celebrate major increases to public transit in Vancouver

Posted in:

VANCOUVER – New Democrat MLAs across Vancouver are welcoming significant increases to local transit services that will reduce overcrowding, cut wait times, create better transit connections, and bring service to new areas.

As ridership continues to grow across the region, commuters in Vancouver will benefit from the following transit increases, beginning September 3:

  • Permanent bus service increases to key routes including the #5 Robson and #6 Davie to help alleviate overcrowding
  • Increased SkyTrain capacity: 5% for Expo Line and 9% for Millennium Line during weekday peaks.
  • 10-minute SeaBus sailings for the first time ever during peak hours.

Transit service increases are being made across Metro Vancouver, including a 50 per cent increase to SeaBus capacity, 6 new SkyTrain cars, and over 40,000 additional bus hours to 14 key routes. This is the first time ever that we’re simultaneously increasing service on Bus, SkyTrain, and SeaBus.

These improvements are funded through Phase One of the Mayor’s Council 10-Year Vision. The New Democrat government is committed to funding 40 per cent of the capital costs of the Mayors’ Council 10-Year Vision.

“For too long, Vancouver’s overloaded and underfunded transit system left people waiting on crowded platforms and stranded while full buses rolled by. With our government’s funding we are working to get more people in Vancouver moving again, so they can spend less time commuting and more time with family and friends.” – Spencer Chandra Herbert, MLA for Vancouver-West End
